There was a time in the late eighties where I found myself at a musical crossroads in life: I was becoming increasingly disgusted with the shenanigans and folks who were starting to head out to dead tour, never really got the Phish scene, and just didn't have big enough hair (as well as little enough taste) to become a metalhead and was just generally lost as far as tuneage goes. At this point I became involved in a lot of underground bands who hadn't yet made it big and who, I felt, were true believers in independent, non-corporate controlled music, bands like Fugazi, Tsunami, Mother Love Bone and others who still played for the sheer aching defiance and angst of it all, the real soul screeching that rock and roll is all about. There were any number of bands involved in this scene, some who made it big (Smashing Pumpkins, NIN, Soundgarden) some who never made it anywhere at all (Contagion, Agent Orange), but the king of all of these bands was Sonic Youth, layers of electronic napalm fuzz sound just building and building. It is still, along with Neil Young and Crazy Horse, the prettiest ugly music that I have ever heard and even better, they've stayed true to the independant credo. So here we go;
