Politics Archive 2004:
Bill Moyers signs off from "NOW"
Last night Bill Moyers final appearance and story was served on "NOW" - and it was a helluva sandwich.
It was a complete dismantling of the "librul media" myth - how the right wing has taken control of the airwaves to forward thier agenda. For one full hour, Bill hammered away at Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, and the accompanied radio parade of talk show hosts for "creating thier own facts".
Bill did a wonderful job at differentiating between what is OPINION and what is FACT - and how the conservative media blends the two without regard to TRUTH. To the conservative media, thier opinion and facts are one and the same....neither of which has a basis in reality. While it may be acceptable to editorialize an opinion that differs from others, this cannot happen when such opinions are based on untrue "facts" - like Iraq's supposed involvement/complicity in 9/11, for example.
While most in TV land were saying goodbye to Brokaw and Rather, I was more concerned about the loss of a more important journalistic figure - Bill Moyers. Bill has covered too many stories that got zero TV coverage anywhere else, and has done it in a manner that gives credit to the journalistic profession.
Bill plans to devote more time to this subject during his "retirement" - although he is leaving "NOW", I'm sure we will hear more from him, as he has stated that he plans to devote the rest of his life exposing the issue of media consolidation and bias.
This is available from PBS for purchase. If you are the type to collect such documentaries as "Outfoxed", order this one. Bill's version is the best I've seen on the subject, and that subject is, IMO, the most pressing issue of our time. As Bill says, "the quality of our journalism is equal to the quality of our democracy". While it is easy to blame those Red Staters for idiocy, it's not to hard to see why they think that way - when thier heads are pumped full of misinformation on a daily basis. If you want to change politics in this country, demand journalism based on truth. It will make all of our goals of change much easier.
And finally, Thanks, Bill.
