Art, Good to see the youngins gettin into GD. Oh by the way it's "Grateful" not "Greatful" please don't ever let that happen again, just kiddin'. Might I suggest a retrospective collection of all the lineups throughout the years and also always kinda nice to have the shows you've been to. Check out this site: http://www.whitegum.com/intro.htm

Reminds me of 2 related stories - back in high school and again as a freshman in college, when I was one of very few Deadheads in school, I was subject to the same harassing graffitti scrawled on my locker door (in high school) and on the dorm door (in college): GREATFUL DEAD SUCK! When approached by the bully/detractors/Kiss-heads who had done the defiling, all I could do was shrug my shoulders and say "well if yer gonna make fun of 'em, at least SPELL THEIR F'-IN NAME RIGHT!!!! I even got to tell the college dude that the same thing had been done to me in 10th grade, so I could dismiss him as passe' (eventually he got into them the next year and wanted me to take him to see them in Buffalo, and get him weed, acid, etc - yeah right!).

Damon hit all the ones I'd recommend! Definitely have fun and try as many shows from 69-79 as possible cause the band went tons of wicked changes which ended up making the music change in wild and wonderful ways.

This continued to happen through the years, but imo, the 60s and the 70s are the years to collect since the number of astoundingly spirit lifting jams, highs, crescendos, magical mind-meld otherworldlyness, yougettheidea - happened during that period!

Wish I had a time machine!!!

Good suggestions Sam!

11/17/73

not one of the oft mentioned shows but still one that finds it's way to my player on a regular basis; love the "Race is on"! Throw 11/20/73 in as well.

6/22-23/74 are also must haves.

Well where to start. See im realatively new but ive picked up so quickly... where to start

78 is the best place
10-17-78 to i think the 20 or 21 its a run of shows at the winterland from right after the egypt tour

Europe 72 stuff(may) is pretty good i kinda dislike the short pigpen songs.

73-74
Some great stuff here check out 10-18-74 for some good stuff. and 6-23-74 is powerful. Then theres the sinker the one that hooks the true fans....6-10-73

12-31-72
Fun ass show

68-69
On the outside all these setlists seem the same. but with the 50-75 songs they then had in they're repitoire it was acutallly well spread out. Alotta jamming but all of its good. I suggest u wait a while for this u might be bored at first.

80-90
I tend to lump all this together because jerry really didnt go through much growth over this period. A lot of solid shows you just need to know how to pick em. Cuz wen they were on they were on but wne they where off they sucked.

HEres a break donw of the players incase u need one:

Jerry garcia- Lead Guitar, Slide guitar, Pedal Steel, Vocals
Bob weir- Rhytm Guitar, Slide guitar, Vocals
Phil Lesh- Bass, Vocals
Bill Kruetzman- Drums

Other players:
Ron "Pigpen" Mckernan- Organ, HArmonica, VOcals, Percoussion(beginning to mid-72)

Tom Constanteen- Piano(Anomoxa to late 69)

Mickey Hart- Drums (After first album to feb. 1971; came back in 76 after hiatus)

Keith Gaudeaux- Piano, Vocals (Early 71-late 79)

Donna JEan Gaudeaux- Vocals (Early 71 to late 79)

Brent Mydland- Keyboards, Organ, Piano, Vocals (80-september 90)

Vince Welnick- Keyboards, Vocals(91-end)

Bruce Hornsby- Piano, Vocals(played freuqently in the 90s)

Branford Marsalis- Sax (frequently throughout 90s)

NOw ure ready to start listenin to the dead
