Music Talk Archive 2004:
Best Drums Space
The Deer Creek Riot Drums/Space was INSANE!
For post 95, check out 7/7/03 at Red Rocks with Kitaro. Unbelievable!
4-11-78
7-8-78
10-31-83
The one with the train whistle in vegas was intense.
The one where I went for a beer and a smoke.
12/30/89 Oakland Coliseum with Airto Moreira. Some scary "Excorcist" shit.
12/9/94 Oakland as well. Sikiru Adepoju sat in on Scarlet>Fire and Drumz. Drumz was so long they only had time for Box of Rain, and then a quick Johnny Be Goode Encore afterwards.
>12/30/89
great all around show, imo. totally under-rated!

An otherwise perfect show KILLED by the post-space I Will Take You Home.
Some of my fav d/s: Seattle 8/14/81, Salt Lake City 8/12/81, Nassau 1/10/79, Indianapolis 12/5/81, Baltimore 4/19/82, most any night of the Spring '83 tour, the 2 St Stephens @ MSG/Hartford, 10/9/89, 3/29/90, 9/12/90, 9/20/90, 12/31/90, 9/10/91, 9/26/91, Vegas 2nd night May '02 w/thunder/lightning storm into Spanish Steps, 12/12/92, 9/13/93, 6/19/94, 7/31 & 8/1/94, 3/18/95.
Add to that 10/29/77, 5/11/77 (technically those 2 are just space), 11/23/78, 8/19/80 (actually space/drums), 11/30/80.
There's also 2 shows from Dec '80 (Long Beach I think) where Airto and Flora are present during drums/space - those are pretty good too - never heard any decent recordings of those though - and the ones I've heard are all cut up during that part (tape flips and such).
6-24-85 mooo
how about an earthquake space or ravenspace? I also really like the "space" from 12/31/78 with Ken Kesey.
I have to second the drums from 7/7/03, that was hot! I feel that the band really needs to follow Jeff into space more frequently, he was phenomenal the second (I think) night at red rocks this year. he's crazy enough to really get places in my opinion.
the rochester war memorial 85 has a drums where billy is on the congas and he gets the crowd to clap a rythem to his beat, you have to listen good, but you can hear him yell c'mon louder or something as the crowd claps.
Earthquake Space 4/18/82
Raven Space 4/19/82
One that stands out for me for some reason is 6/24/95. It was so very dark and mean.
I also like the D/S from 1988.
D/S was often the best part of post-Hornsby Dead. Alot of new-age exploration there and some of Garcia's best stuff of the era.
pick a show? 6/30/94 was pretty wild, better the the Dark Star that night! 9/24/91 into Foolish Heart is a great one for the Hornsby era. the Gyoto Monk thing was decent at Shoreline 95(6/2?).
alot of good ones in 89 as well as the aforementioned raven/nitrous/earthquake spaces from the early 80s
7-17-88 Greek Theatre
dark, powerful, and post-industrial...scary stuff kiddies!
>>>>> I also like the D/S from 1988.
88 was probably the WORST year for D/S - VERY short drums, almost exactly the same every night, Space was only Jerry and Bobby doing the same noodling every night for only 2-3 min's, then they'd go into the post-Space tune whilst Phil and Brent were re-joining from the side - this ALWAYS pissed me off so much . . .

A friend of mine was at the New Year's Eve 1983 show and kept raving about it. I downloaded it from the Archive and was particularly impressed by the Drums/Space.
The one from Merryweather Post Pavillion in 85, can't recall the date right off the top of my head, Scarlet/Fire to open the 2nd set. That space is whack, completely twists my brain when I listen to it.
I recall a good train space at the Palace in 92 also !
Alpine 87, friday night, the jungle space out of Estimated/Eyes was quite intense too !
