Rumsfeld getting tough questions from troops preparing to go into Iraq at a Kuwait "pep rally"

“Why do we soldiers have to dig through local landfills for pieces of scrap metal and compromised ballistic glass to up-armor our vehicles?” Wilson asked. A big cheer arose from the approximately 2,300 soldiers in the cavernous hangar who assembled to see and hear the secretary of defense.

Rumsfeld hesitated and asked Wilson to repeat his question.

Rumsfeld hesitates and asks soldier to repeat the question,

“We do not have proper armored vehicles to carry with us north,” Wilson said after asking again. Wilson's unit is about to drive into Iraq for a one-year tour of duty.

Rumsfeld replied that, “You go to war with the Army you have, not the one you might want.

And, the defense chief added, armor is not always a savior in the kind of combat U.S. troops face in Iraq, where the insurgents’ weapon of choice is the roadside bomb, or improvised explosive device that has killed and maimed hundreds, if not thousands, of American troops since the summer of 2003.

“You can have all the armor in the world on a tank and it can (still) be blown up,” Rumsfeld said.

Great answer Mr. Secretary. That really instills confidence!

what an ass.

Did you know Rumsfeld is both the youngest and the oldest Secretary of Defense? He served under Ford. Jeopardy question tonight.

Rummy and Cheney have been butt-buddies since the Ford administration. Shrubbie works for them. This war isn't about war, it's about money.

Jon Stewart had a funny bit about why some are going and some are staying. Basically saying that the officials that really ought to go, well Bush can't let them go because that would be admitting that they were really bad and SHOULD be gone... (in keeping with the 'I've never made a mistake' theme of this admin)

Man, you know it was somewhat satifying to see the enlisted men and women hand Rummy his ass on a silver platter, but the experience was tempered by the snide remark "you go to war with the army you have."

I took that to mean that he thought the US Army was a second rate goon squad. This man has no respect for the troops, and all these people that love the troops so much back home should be calling for Rumsfeld's head.

>>"you go to war with the army you have."

Too bad the troops didn't reply with:

"Hell NO! We won't go"
