Music Talk Archive 2004:
Something Melloooow?
Can some one suggest a band/artist that is superduper Melloow? I mean really Melloow, someting to listen to while totaly relaxing, maybee driving late at night, or even going to sleep. Spacy, slow, yet smooth and even.
The classic Kind of Blue always does it for me.
Stanley Jordan is also some light sweetness I listen to when going to be, but they guitar work might keep ya up all night. Light solo Jazz.
Joshua Bell & edgar Meyer - Short Trip Home
is very very relaxing and melodic, as is Edgar Meyer's Uncommon Ritual. natural music.
Also there's Pat Metheney & Jim Hall Duets that is so very beautiful and will surrender you to the night.
be careful driving late night to some of this stuff, it usually makes me sleepy around that time of night. Usually when I'm driving with the midnight oil burning I turn to the hard stuff to keep me going.
Once I was comin home from SF and my friend had only one cd with her. Rage Against the Machine. That was rough, good thing we made 400 miles in 4 hours!
Blues From the Rainforest (Merl & Jerry)
>>>Joshua Bell & edgar Meyer - Short Trip Home
great music
also ma, meyer and o'connor...Appalachian Journey
Anything Jamie Janover Solo- Hammered Dulcimer Player, awesome, feel asleep to him lst nite
Acoustic Alchemy- compilation
I love Pat Metheny or Kimock on long dreamy drives (in/outside).
Cowboy Junkies
Cocteau Twins - "Victorialand" ~ ubber mellow, but seriously beautiful w/o being new-agey

Pat Metheny's "One Quiet Night" is way mellow (solo acoustic)
Original Genesis guitarist Anthony Phillips has a lot of nice mellow records
Jackie O Motherfucker
Something that meets most of your criteria (except slow) is Ipanema Lounge by Bossacucanova
Jazzy, spacy, trippy, floaty ... in fact I'm soaking in it right now.
if only I could remember my name ~ david crosby

nice skadhi...yur a poet! I know it!
I made this mix for my wife to listen to while she was in labor. She listened to it regularly during the pregnancy, when she was in comfortable, relaxed situations. We wanted her to get to associate these tunes with being totally relaxed, to help with labor. She listened to it for the last hour of labor, while in the hot tub, and it really helped. It also makes a great sunday morning coffee cd. Send me an email if you'd like a copy.

You could also take some of Kimmocks stuff and edit out the parts where he thinks he is funky. Apart from that much of his stuff is mellow and quite listenable.
Crosby/Nash- Another Stoney Evening
Michael Hedges- Live on a Double Planet
Pathfinder - There is a great band out of Duluth Minnesota called Low that specializes in slow, spacy, super mellow rock. The critics here in Minneapolis call them the Kings of"slowcore" but they are a truly great band that just play softer and slower than most bands. You may also want to check out Luna,Spacemen Three,or Yo La Tengo for some interesting sonic explorations that is more mellow than most. American Music Club's albums are more somber than outright mellow but have great songs and lyrics depicting the not so pretty side of the Cali lifestyle. There's also a slew of alt - country bands that feature some really great mellow tunes like Kelly Willis,Moonshine Willy,Bobby Bare Jr.,Neko Case, and Kelly Hogan. Look for a Bloodshot Records, out of Chicago, compilation as a starter if you are interested in any of that type of stuff. One new band that I've been enjoying the most this fall is I See Hawks in LA - They are a laid - back 70's sounding band that reminds me of early Eagles,Burritos, and Poco - great singing and playing all around, hope this helps - Peace

But if you are really looking for spacy and smooth and dreamy all in one, I highly suggest you pick up the album "Dream Signals and Full Circles" by Tristeza. I guarantee you its what you're looking for.
I forgot to add...
anything by The Album Leaf (which is the main guy from Tristeza). Dreamy, lush, instrumental space.
Brian Eno - any of his ambient stuff.

Great suggestions Folks, im deffinatly going to get to the Record stores after christmas. An Idea: How about a "Mellow Fellows" Vine, Take a couple of super Melloooow shows or songs and put together a vine. That would be a great Vine for people to stick in on Super Snowy January days.
Thanks all!
you just gave me a cool idea...what if someone starts a vine...take a blank disc and burn one song on it...then mail it to the next person on the sign up...they add one song too...and so on
1. JoeBlow@yahoo in month/day "add some song" out to next person
2. JoeSchmoe@aol in month/day "added some other song" out again to next
3. SarahSilly@netzoid
4. Somebody@aholeL
5. SomebodyElse@yablew
6. and so on
you would recieve a disc from the person ahead of you...you then have to burn a new disc...so you can add your song...then you finalize the disc before sending on to the next person...who would have to burn a new disc from your copy...and add their song before finalizing...each copy is actually a throw-away...untill you get to the last person...or fill the disc...(which ever comes first)...then you reverse the vine...sending the disc back up the list so everyone gets a copy of the completed disc
whaalaa...zoner compiled disc
lets do it...someone start one
pink floyd animals
Good Call on the Michael Hedges.
Jerry Garcia and Sanja Mishra "Blue Incantations" is always a good one (even though jerry is only on a few tracks.)
Want some more mellow stuff? Try these in addition to the above:
1. "Astral Travelling" by Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes (1973)
2. "Expansions" by Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes (1974)
3. "Sunset To Dawn" by Kenny Barron (1973) - you might find this one packaged with another Barron album, "Golden Lotus", under the title "Soft Spoken Here", part of a series of great 2fers from the 32Jazz label. I found it during my first stay in NY in 1997. Hope it's still available.
4. "Officium" by Jan Gabarek & The Hilliard Ensemble (medieval choral music meets jazz saxophone - utterly chilled out!).
5. "Rubycon" by Tangerine Dream
Oh yes, just remembered another mellow classic you just have to get:
"Simpatico" by John Klemmer & Oscar Castro-Neves.
