Music Talk Archive 2004:
Christmas music - Blind Boys & Friends
Just got a listen to a new Blind Boys of Alabama holiday album. It's the Blind Boys, w/ a backing band of John Medeski on organ, Duke Robaillard (sp) on guitar, acoustic double bass and drums. Guest vocalists include Tom Waits, Solomon Burke, Chryssie Hynde, Aaron Neville, Mavis Staples, George Clinton and there's a guest guitar performance from Robert Randolph.
I'll be listening again, and again, throughout the rest of the season. 1-7/8 thumbs up. There are one or two clunkers, like Michael Franti, who I love in Spearhead, on a version of The Little Drummer Boy, but it's more than made up by some of the real highlights.
>>>Duke Robaillard (sp) on guitar
Robillard; former guitar player in Roomfull of Blues (after Jimmy Vaughn left) and great session player for many others. Check out Dylan's Time Outa Mind... he is on it. One of the best guitar players around in my book... check out his solo "Swing" or "Dukes Blues" CD. Nobody gets closer to the old T-Bone Walker style... NOBODY!
Me thinks Ill be on the way to pick up the Blinds Boys CD after work.

I was thinking the same thing. Need some Christmas music around the house that is doable. Thanks for the recomendation Zeke!
BTW: The album title is Go Tell It On the Mountain.
We have a ridiculous amount of holiday music, everywhere from Pavarotti singing Oh Holy Night, to Mel Torme singing the Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting) to Miles Davis playing Blue Christmas, a Jorma Christmas album, Canadian Brass, Brian Setzer Orchestra, even the Muppets w/ John Denver. And others too numerous to mention.
yah...blind boys

They did a series of holiday shows with special guests to support the album last winter. The one from The Beacon was taped for a PBS special that is playing now.
