5) - Lay Lady Lay - I know it may not be one of his best but it was the first one I remember listening to in my friend's basement as a youngster and has stuck with me through the decades of Bobdom.
4) - Cold Iron Bounds - The best of the rockers from Love and Theft and Time Out of Mind this one still burns it up live even after Bob made the shift from guitar slinger to piano pounder in 2002.
3) - I'll Remember You - Seeing Bob play this at his first show in his birthplace of Duluth back in 98 was spellbinding. A great ballad from his post born-again phase represented by Infidels and Empire Burlesque.
2) - Tangled Up In Blue - Special not just for it being perhaps the greatest acoustic based rock song, but also for the many great versions I got to see the JGB shred this thing to pieces. The lean - in,the bend over and turn of the volume pots, the smile and then lift off - The Jerry Garcia Band has just left the stratosphere!!!
1) - One More Cup Of Coffee - A great road song,a great love that was never meant to be song, a great musical song, and a great lyrical song. This was the culmination of all the greatness that Bob was producing at his mid-70's apogee. The impassioned violins and vocals intertwining with the tale's narrative showcases the depth and richness of Bob's writing at this time and is a benchmark to which other songwriter's hope that their craft can someday reach. The best on the album of best songs!!! Isis,Mozambigue,Black Diamond Bay,etc - a master at the top of his game.
Dang, it *is* hard to name only five...
Visions of Johanna
Masters of War
A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
Mr. Tambourine Man
Highway 61 Revisited
5.) Boots of Spanish Leather
4.) Isis
3.) Visions of Johanna
2.) Masters of War
1.) Tangled up in Blue or John Brown
wow this is tough.. its hard to nail one down.. I look at this quick list I made and I can think of 20 other songs that should probably be in it..
as of right now my top 5 are
mississippi-probably one of the greatest songs ever written by anybody
no time to think-all of street legal is very underrated
visions of johanna-
desolation row- both show how he was really a genious
to ramona- just a really cool song
almost every song of Dylans is my favorite.
I like No Time to Think and a lot of songs on Street Legal. Unfortunately my CD of it sounds like it was recorded over a telephone or something.
I think one of best songs of Bob Dylans that he performed is Hurricane.
every song on blood on the tracks is stellar. that disc is in my player 24/7
