Sports and Trivia Archive 2004:
Just when I thought I couldn't hate Billy Packer more...
...he redeemed himself momentarily by quoting the Nature Boy during UNC's asswhooping of Kentucky when he said, "To be the man you gotta beat the man!" Had he followed that with a WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I would have to go back to hating DOOKIE V more than Packer.
Speaking of the Heels, whoopin' up on Indiana and Kentucky in a 4-day span should send a message to all who care to listen: WE ARE BACK!
McCants stepping up is really excellent. May and Williams too. Next five games are a breath, which is nice because conference play is going to be no cakewalk.
This year's theme:
PAYBACK
Billy Packer is ok. Vitale is unwatchable when covering Dook. And most other times as well.
Floyd man, you need to branch out....let go man...there are professionals who can help you.
(((stop the hate)))
this week 5 ACC teams in top 10, four of 'em from state of NC (Heels, dook, Wake and NC State)
could be funnest season EVER!
and does anyone else remember when Packer cut his teeth doing commentary/play by play for the Professional Putt Putt Tour in the 60's-70's?
"must be the shoes!"
ooooover-raaaated...clap...clap..clap,clap,clap..
ooooover-raaaated...clap...clap..clap,clap,clap..
I DO remember Packer doing Putt Putt. However, even before that he did those regional ACC telecasts for Pilot Life (later to become Jefferson Pilot) with the great Jim Thacker as his partner. Yep, it was Thacker and Packer. And Notty, it sures shows a lot of sack for you to show your face after your deity Brett Favre and the Packers got pummeled last weekend. Did the entire state go into mourning and lay off the cheese for a few days? And also, anyone from the Big 10 who dares to say that the ACC is overrated this season clearly knows nothing about college hoops. And furthermore: SUCK IT! Love ya Notty!

Wisconsin pounded defending ACC tournament champ Maryland......'nuff said.
>>>could be funnest
Didn't go to college, huh?
DUKE !
Using Notty's logic. Carolina just beat Indiana and Kentucky in a 4-day span. These are two of the elite programs, so I guess us beating them makes us the elite. Duh! We are the elite program anyway, the gold standard of college hoops!
hey Floyd,
did you just use "Notty" and "logic" in the same sentence?
actually, the fact that you employed the greatest Coach in college basketball history, turned out possibly the greatest player to ever step onto the hardwood, and i believe hold the record for the most consecutive tournament appearances pretty much solidify your elite status.....how is that for logic?
>>the fact that you employed the greatest Coach in college basketball history
I think the folks at UCLA might take issue with that statement....interchangeable positions I think-sometimes Dean's the best, other times Wooden's the best
yeah, well screw those California pussys.

>>> Didn't go to college, huh?
actually Zang, I DID. And as part of my Jedi training at Chapel Hill they offered a top-secret gov't funded word enhancement program allowing an elite number of us to take, shall we say, certain grammatic liberties?
Floyd, 'member the "Sail with the Pilot" jingle?
LOVED that song!
right on up there with the "Valleydale Bacon Song," later adopted and word enhanced by the Carolina Panthers!!
number 6? BWHAHAHAHAHA
(((Felton's wrist)))
(((Rashad's Head))))
Valleydale Sausage, Valleydale bacon, Valleydale weiners, boom boom boom Valleydale! You gotta love the marching band of pigs. And I do recall the Sail with the Pilot jingle. Here's one for you: do you remember the Tennessee Pride Sausage jingle? And Notty, I love your logic about why UNC is THE gold standard. All in all you are a good fella. And lastly, while UCLA had that amazing run for Wooden, they haven't done much before or since (95 being the exception). They have had way more scandal, turmoil, and outright mediocrity since Wooden retired. So I think this removes them from elite status. Yes, most title ever, most in a row. But to be the elite a school has to have had success for an extended run and under multiple coaches. The Heels have all of that. They had 2 championships and decades of winning before Dean Smith ever arrived. Same with Kentucky. DOOK doesn't. To be elite they will have to continue the success after K leaves. And before K DOOK mostly sucked, with the exception of a couple of years under Dick Bubas in the mid-60s and that one trip to the Final Four under Bill Foster (the one who didn't have the curly perm) in 78. OK, there's your treatise on the college basketball elite along with a short history of the ACC thrown in.
