Man, oh man, I've been listening to so much good shit since yesterday. Finally, the "Beyond Description" box set and the GD Movie DVD, soundtrack and t-shirt package arrived in the UK. Had to retrieve my parcel from a local post office depot 7am yesterday (thankfully no custom's charges to pay!) but it was worth the early rise. I've been working my way through the many CDs and, as with "The Golden Road" set, I find myself astonished at just how fine a group the Dead were in the studio.

No question, they were at their best when firing on all cylinders during a show but every studio album in "Beyond Description" demonstrates that they also had few peers when it came to making albums. I don't see why the Dead should be ashamed of efforts like "Terrapin Station", "Shakedown Street" or "Go To Heaven". They are sensational albums!

And "Wake Of The Flood", "Mars Hotel" and "Blues For Allah" ought to be ranked alongside "Workingman's Dead" and "American Beauty".

Both Live and Studio
are standard in my collection
but some favorite studio albums are

Aoxomoxoa
Terrapin
Mars Hotel
Workingman's Dead
Wake of the Flood

These albums are perfect for road trips and head trips alike, with killer recordings of 'New Speedway', 'Mountains of the Moon', 'Doin tha Rag', 'Eyes','Pride of Cucamonga', and ofcourse 'Unbroken Chain'. Live is the best way with these boys, but sometimes when they went into the studio it was just as good.

I think they did some trickery in the studio to get the vocals to sound so good.

I think American Beauty is one of the all time best studio albums by any band!
