Has anyone else been following the developments in the Ukraine elections? The story below is the full recap as of right now (WED U.S.). There are some interesting paralles.

1)The Ukrainian election commission announced late Monday that Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych had a slim but unassailable lead over Yushchenko

2) But exit polls indicate Yushchenko is the winner and many Western nations say the election did not meet democratic standards.

and this interesting note:

3)Yushchenko symbolically swore the oath of office on a Bible. The country's constitution, however, stipulates that the president swears allegiance on a copy of the constitution. In Washington, the White House issued a statement saying the United States is "deeply disturbed by extensive and credible indications of fraud committed in the Ukrainian presidential election." ( Hahahhaha..)

The White House statement said it strongly supported an investigation of the election.

from msnbc:

"The United States and the European Union have both urged Ukraine not to certify the election result until claims of fraud are investigated."

I believe Yuschenko's "swearing in" was a gesture of protest. I don't think the use of the Bible rather than the Constitution is really symbolic of anything, other than the fact that they don't have access to the Constitution because they weren't the official victors. Could be wrong, but this is my understanding of it.

Yuschenko, supported by the western population of the country, wants to move the Ukraine out of Russia's orbit towards a more Western perspective; Yanukovych is Putin's man and is supported by the industrial sectors of the eastern Ukraine.
