04-19-83 Alfond Arena, U. of Maine, Orono, Me. (Tue)
1: Jack Straw, FOTD> All Over Now, Dire Wolf> Big River, Dupree's, On The Road Again, West L. A., Lazy Lightning> Supplication> Might As Well
2: Sugaree> Samson, He's Gone> Drumz> Spanish Jam> Truckin> Wharf Rat> Around> Good Lovin E: U. S. Blues

I was 15, and had been into the Dead for a few years, but really didn't like the live stuff at all. I had recently gotten Long, Strange, Trip, and couldn't believe how terrible the live St. Stephen was. Yes, that's the St. Stephen from Live Dead. D'oh. I went in expecting to see a typical concert where the band plays their hits, so I assumed we'd get truckin, sugar mags, golden road - pretty much anything on skeletons in the closet.

As it turns out, I had a curfew because of a baseball game the next day, and could only stay for the first set. I loved Jack Straw, fucking hated FOTD because it was so SLOW, and Dire Wolf was the only other tune I knew. I had fun, but wasn't overwhelmed by any stretch.

But what was truly incredible were all these tshirts people had on. They were these crazy multi-colored things with really cool patterns them. I had never seen anything like it. These days, I think they call them "tie-dyes."

I also saw something I'd never seen before, which was these circles of people (wearing those crazy colored shirts, of course) standing around playing some game where they hit this little bean bag up in the air with their feet. What a strange concept, but it did look kinda fun.

06/18/83 (Sat) Saratoga Performing Arts Center - Saratoga Springs, NY

Set 1: Bertha > Jack Straw, Bird Song, Mexicali Blues > Big River, Althea, Hell In A Bucket > Deal

Set 2: Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain, Playing In The Band > Drums > The Wheel > Playing In The Band (reprise) > Morning Dew, Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away > Touch of Grey, E:Don't Ease Me In, E: One More Saturday Night

I was 19 years old and although I preferred to say I didn't like the Dead, I had recently come to like "Blues for Allah"
I rode out from New Hampshire with a bunch of friends from UNH. Scored the hit of "A" for $2 and the rest as they say is history.
The crowd was a rush. Phil was impressive. My hallucinations were immense.
Bertha is still one of my all-time faovrites.
Awesome Morning Dew

set 1: Playing In The Band > Crazy Fingers > Space > Little Red Rooster, Dupree's Diamond Blues, Beat It On Down The Line, It Must Have Been The Roses > Playing In The Band Jam > Let It Grow > Keep Your Day Job

set 2: Shakedown Street > Lost Sailor > Saint Of Circumstance > Drums > Space > Not Fade Away > Stella Blue > Around And Around > Good Lovin'
Encore Touch Of Grey

just started the last yr of high school...was very psyched to see the band since some of my friends had been to the cool Balt. civic center show in April of 82 and ranted about that for months & months.

being a newbie i couldn't truly appreciate the Playin' spaciness that was in the 1st set. Since this was my first show, and being a big fan of the Stones, i really enjoyed hearing the boys take on rooster, nfa, around & around.

>>>> away so much that you saw 1 show a year!

I was f-in' FOURTEEN YEARS OLD (at my 1st show) - considered myself lucky as hell to have been taken to those 1st 3 - plus in those days there really weren't very many "tourheads" - going to a GD show was no different than going to any other show - basically similar people - a buncha stoners - at least to the shows I went to (Clapton/Yes/Eagles/Doobies/etc).

I was 20 and my college friends talked me into going to the show. They told me what to expect so no real big surprises.

A couple things stood out:

1) While they were tuning up there was a guy near us stretching out before dancing.

2) Fire was the 1 song I wanted to hear; they started the 2nd set with Scarlet and friends tell me it looks like I got lucky. Then they play Touch out of Fire. This to me summed up what being a Dead fan was all about.

in retrospect, this whole show is amazing, but I remember everybody freaking at the iko> dew

Not sure how many I saw.... First one though was Merriweather !983 what I remember most was "Wharf Rat" Mother Nature sat in with some extra percussion that night. Seemed like there was thunder at the end of each chorus of I'll get up and fly away" as the saying goes that was when the bus went by and boy did I get on.

I wasnt into the dead (yet). I was at a 3 day festival and all of a sudden Sunday morning the whole crowd seemed to turn into tie dye wearing hippies passing out acid at 9:00 in the morning.
God Bless America! I remember thinking....I also remember thinking "I can't beleive they didn't play Casey Jones" (which was the only song I knew at the time) But now looking back after many many shows, I saw a pretty good setlist and show for my first time even with out Casey. I think i'll break out that show and give it a listening to now.
