There's a RED HOUSE over yonder baby!
What a crazy, crazy night (good and bad) in Eugene. My head is still spinning...to recap, where to begin...

Ever since the Fillmore Mule shows last week, I had been anxiously awaiting this weekend, getting not one but two more Mule shows, thanks to the boys' extended travels on the Left Coast.

It was worth the wait and then some. Every song in the first set just laid it down. Intensity. An old fashioned Mule kicking from start to end. For an often played tune, Thorazine crackled with electrictiy, setting the bar for the rest of the set. Time to Confess and Lay your Burden Down were especially crushing in their intent. Blind man, like Thorazine, was played with a fury that was much different than the Fillmore. About 70 minutes, only one new tune, and on to setbreak. Preshow, it was cool to meet Oregon Joe from the zone over a Fat Tire. Joe you rethinking "going tonight"? haha

Now I know from last April that this venue is harsh on tokin inside. But they have an outdoor smoking lounge so we went for it. Bad idea. We got BOOTED! Set up like a bowling pin, fucker was all like "dont smoke marijuana in this venue, tell your friends!" as he pushed us out the backdoor. I was like "yeah I'll tell them not come to your venue" Three of us were on the street totally bumming. You just KNEW some heavy shit was going to happen in set 2. The dick who booted us
put a black light "X" over top of our stamps so the door peeps woulnt let us in.

Well we went to the front of the venue and scoped. There were "Ins/Outs" so we had to try. I went in with a crowd and my two friends were right behind. I made it thru, flashing my wrist super quick and kept on walking. My friends got snagged :-( and never made it back in. :-(

Holy shit what a weird feeling- in the show- out of the show- back in minus friends before the music started.

Second set was sublime. What can I say, We got two Mule tunes I had only ever dreamed of hearing...Red House and Goin out West. Red House out of BLD was so SICK. Warren was on a mission...the audience had yelled out for Goin out West earlier in the show and when they came back out anbd busted into it....fuck YEAH. One of my fave Mule tunes of all time, and it ended with Warren directing the crowd to sing the chorus
"Goin out West
Where they appreciate me..." as the band left the stage.

The Mule is on a seriouSe roll and I cant wait for tonight at the Crystal Ballroom. Sparkables will be combusted prior to entering the venue, we're not in San Francisco anymore!

Thanks for the review Hans. Sounds like you had a crazy night. You gotta love the 4:20 friendly Fillmore.

Smoking in a tight venue is tricky, but can be done. The key is to be with a group of people- two or three. Use a "sneak a toke" type device. Take a quick hit and blow it out quick. Clandestinely pass the pipe to your buddy, then have him pass it to the other buddy. Have cigarrette lit as well. By the time they get to you- the hit is gone and so it the device. They don't have shit. A chunk of bud in the end of a cigarette works also. It's an art, but can be done. People usually get busted when they do multiple tokes and pass it around- it gives staff time to sneak up and catch you in the act. Happy smoking-

what a sick show, maybe the best Mule Ive seen to date-- and thanks to "Mtn Jam Ed" it is already being vined on this site (in the shn/flac vine section). Here is an "event" poster they had at the last three shows...it is too big for my scanner so I took a crappy photo of it, apologies in advance

Man thats some freaky shit . i cant believe we live on the same coast . how different vancouver is to eugene . the last time i was in eugene was for the gd shows in 94 . Obviously smoking was not a problem . I was always under the assumption you guys were lax with your pot laws .
In most jam shows up here you can smoke a dube and talk to a bouncer at the same time .
no cigarettes indoors though , haha.
