Music Talk Archive 2004:
Bring Back Vince Welnick!
Obvious choice for a new Dead lineup...
Vince
You know you miss him!
No. I don't
c'mon, I know samba in the rain isn't the best jam, and his little 'six-shooter' thing durin I fought the law was cheesy, but his keys on h.c. sunshine, weather report, terrapin and many others were a great part of that killer nineties sound...and everyone digs 'way to go home',,,
>>weather report
??
Vince would have been more listenable if he had just backed off on the vocals a bit. IMHO, his keys(albeit a little thin and tinkly)are not that intrusive, and once in a while very good. His vocal backups are annoying to listen to, tho.
for those of you that *might not know* .... Vince tried to commit suicide while touring with Ratdog [I don't recall if he was actually in Ratdog at that point or another band playing w/ Ratdog]. he talked about this in a Relix interview. said he was real low after Jerry's passing and all... AND he mentioned that after that he pretty much figured he wouldn't be playing or touring with Bob in any way ever again.
so you can forget your "bring back Vince" baloney... personally I wouldn't want to him around either, there is no excuse for Vince trying to kill himself at that point in his life, playing in the GD gave him the $ to retire and hang out, remember he was preparing to flee the US due to no funds, etc when he was picked to sit in the chair behind the keyboards.
this is verifiable truth sorry if it's *news* to you Vince fans.... maybe he can sit in w/ the Cheese sometime again....

Its not really breaking news here, kenk. The "Vinny in the back of the tour bus" story has pretty much been played to the hilt around here.
the original post was intended as ***sarcasm****.
For those of you that *might not know*, that is

just pushing buttons...
"there is no excuse for Vince trying to kill himself at that point in his life"
Ha ha ha. I didn't know God posted here...
Vince did and still does SUCK!
I will however, toss him a quarter the next time I see him playing down at the subway station.
I agree with Sunstroke's first post.
Brent was, far and away, my favorite GD keyboardist. Vince played at nearly half of the GD shows that I ended up seeing in total. I thought that he was fine at the time, and I occasionally defended his playing with other 'heads.
I'll never really slam his contributions, but I gotta admit that when I listen to past shows that he particiapted in, they're lacking in energy. Of course, the rest of the band can't be considered blameless there...
That said, I used to post pretty regularly on Vince's message board. He periodically goes on-line to answer questions, however briefly. For all that he's been through, he seems pretty cool. And yes, I have read many of the weird Vince stories that have surfaced through the last few years.
don't know too much about Vince really-HOWEVER I heard him at a "Beatle Jam" and thought he was great. Good versions of some great tunes and he had a good stage presence. was also very cordial when I met him in the lobby of the Keswick Theater. Could he really be worse than Rob Barraco!
99% of the keyboardists on Planet Earth are worse than Rob Barraco. I don't think I've ever seen that guy play a bad note, and he has great energy.
"that killer nineties sound"
I was going to question this, but if you were being sarcastic to begin with, that's just mean.
please don't elevate Barraco to the top 1% of keyboard players...
