Sometimes George Steinbrenner does his own negotiating, and on Tuesday he met face-to-face with the most prominent free agent pitcher on the market -- Pedro Martinez, who, to date, has not accepted a two-year, $27.5 million offer from the Boston Red Sox.
Steinbrenner loves stars, has always been enamored with the idea of taking stars away from the rival Red Sox, and it seems unlikely that he would meet with Martinez without having some intention of making at least a competitive offer.
"We had a good meeting," was all Steinbrenner said in a statement.
Two American League executives -- one had spoken with the Yankees, the other had been in contact with Martinez's agents -- told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark that Tuesday's meeting in Tampa was requested by Martinez's agent, Fernando Cuza.
Cuza, Martinez and Cuza's partner, Pat Rooney, flew to Tampa and requested a meeting with Steinbrenner and some of the club's Tampa-based officials, the sources said.
Cuza, according to The Associated Press, said the meeting "was good."
It's a situation that probably concerns some Yankees officials: At a time when the club needs to get younger and is locked up in long-term contracts with older players, Steinbrenner is wooing a 33-year-old right-hander who has shown signs of wear-and-tear in recent years.
Since the Yankees lost the 2001 World Series to Arizona, Steinbrenner has increasingly worked independently of his highest-ranked baseball executives, including general manager Brian Cashman and longtime official Gene Michael, with mixed results.
Martinez and his agents opted to deal directly with Steinbrenner, since the Yankees executives in New York had indicated no real interest in the pitcher, sources told Stark.
That tactic for negotiations was used successfully last winter by both Gary Sheffield and Kenny Lofton.
One source told Stark the Yankees' New York operation wasn't aware Tuesday's meeting with Martinez was taking place until hours before it occurred.
Steinbrenner arranged a two-year deal with David Wells in January of 2002, despite the fact that many within the organization believed Wells was unreliable and unprofessional, and Wells pitched well in the regular season -- but was unable to go past the first inning of Game 5 of the 2003 World Series because of back trouble.
Steinbrenner ordered a trade for right fielder Raul Mondesi in the midst of the 2002 season, and Mondesi was a disaster. Last fall, Steinbrenner met with free-agent outfielder Sheffield and reached a handshake agreement on a contract; when Sheffield tried to back out of that deal, the Yankees' baseball executives worked to near-completion on a deal with slugger Vladimir Guerrero -- a player they preferred because he is eight years younger than Sheffield.
But Sheffield capitulated in the negotiations, and Steinbrenner ordered the signing of Sheffield -- who finished second in the AL MVP voting that was announced Tuesday. Guerrero won the award, his first.
Now Steinbrenner has moved on Martinez, a longtime arch-enemy of the Yankees. He had once dominated them, setting a single-game strikeout record for an opposing pitcher when he whiffed 17 Yankees in September 1999, beating them in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series that fall.
But Martinez mostly has struggled to beat the Yankees since then, frustrations that prompted him to say once that he would drill the Bambino in the rear if somebody woke up the deceased slugger, and then, late this year, said that perhaps he would have to call the Yankees his daddies. Martinez has probably been the opposing player most despised in the Yankees' clubhouse, after he's hit some of the Yankees repeatedly and after the on-field brawl in the 2003 playoffs, which concluded with Martinez throwing then-coach Don Zimmer to the ground. Recently, Yankees catcher Jorge Posada said that if Martinez signed with the Yankees, all would be forgotten. <- Has Posada been drinking the urine instead of soaking with it?
It may be that Steinbrenner and Martinez are using each other in this dalliance -- Steinbrenner, to drive up the price that Boston eventually pays to the All-Star pitcher, and Martinez, in invoking the Yankees to get more money out of the Red Sox.
But it's also possible that Steinbrenner wants Martinez, who has a career record of 182-76 with an ERA of 2.71; based on his record of dominance, he is virtually a lock to be voted into Hall of Fame one day. Martinez went 16-9 for Boston last season, with a 3.90 ERA, and he struck out 227 batters in 217 innings. Increasingly, there has been concern that Martinez has trouble getting loose in cold weather, a problem that could reflect shoulder trouble.
Steinbrenner may look past that, however. Maybe he's ready to give Martinez a four-year offer, some deal written out on a napkin. The possibility might worry Yankees executives more than those of the Red Sox.
Wow! Please George - take him!
so #6, how do you exactly feel about the Yanks getting their hands on Pedro?
more importantly, do you expect the Brew Crew to make a run at him?
this would be all on George cause his 'people' are against it.
now - lets talk about the Sheffield Sex Tape
sounds like a washed up roger syndrome post #6

Helloooo?
>>>>>A self-proclaimed minister tried to blackmail Gary Sheffield over alleged threesome sex tapes featuring the Yankee slugger's gospel-singer wife, another woman and R&B star R. Kelly, the player's rep and sources said yesterday.
Rufus Williams, the outfielder's business agent, revealed stunning details of the reputed plot to shake down his client for at least $20,000 to keep the raunchy tapes from surfacing and embarrassing the devoutly religious Sheffields.
The alleged footage of Sheffield's 28-year-old wife, DeLeon, Kelly, 36, and the unidentified other woman was said to have been made more than 10 years ago.

El Duque is the dude who washed up

Pedro is washed up....He's the most over rated pitcher baseball has seen..
King George is just bluffing to get the Blow Sox

The yanks will get Randy Johnson instead..
Yipes, You guys in Beantown can keep him !
Brick, You gonna vine that sex tape ? LOL !
>Pedro is washed up....He's the most over rated pitcher baseball has seen..
Overrated since when? I hate the Red Sox, but some of Pedro's seasons, where his ERA is 2.00 less than the next lowest ERA are off the charts. Did I mention that Johnny Damon is a future Hall of Famer?
Pedro's great pitching only happens against chump teams...He has only one big game win..Every other big game he can't get passed the 6th inning..And if he's into the 7th by some slim chance..The Sox lose..
Yeah if the yankees want a pitcher to beat up on the small market losers..Pedro is the guy..
Pedro should get butt fucked by all the other pitchers on the sox that bailed his ass out..
Pedro a great pitcher against chump teams
Well he looked pretty good against the NY Chokers during the playoffs,oh right they are a chump team
Johnson to NY? For who? You still have no one AZ wants, no prospects and nothing but guys with overpriced contracts, Brown, Vasquez,Giambi, what will you offer?
>>Well he looked pretty good against the NY Chokers during the playoffs,oh right they are a chump team>>
Just how good did he look....So good he calls the yankees his Daddy...
Oh wait you mean the middle relief during the world series when he could barely make it thru one middle inning, then was pulled...OK...
Wakefield was and is better against the yankees in big games..
sheffields' wife is a skank.
all that bank- get a nose job for cryin out loud
as you were
Did R.Kelly piss on her too??
Sheff must a took one hell of a riod filled dump on her to snag that chic..
Hey Tim whp pitched game 7 and shut down the mighty CHOKERS?
Bottom line? If I was an owner I wouldn't give him 3 yrs either, 33 yr old man with a 38 yr old arm and it will only get worse.2 yrs take a shot , and I think he will find the 3rd yr hard to get and return to Beantown, its the Pavano sweepstakes we should all be thinking about Milton will sign with the Yanks but i think that is a mistake, 43 HR's allowed and a 4,85 ERA will not sit well at the Stadium. George is boxed into a corner, too much money tied up in players who do not preform or he cannot unhold
>>all that bank- get a nose job for cryin out loud
Saw the pic on the back of the Post last night....my first thought was "fix up that shovel face PRONTO"
scarifyin, No?

Tim
I apologize, I brain froze, Lowe pitched game 7 against the Yankees, so maybe he is a bum, either way what I said above about the number of yrs still stands
My deepest apology
"Leon don't pee on nobody for less than 10 g's..."

I swear ta Gawd- i thoght someone done PhotShopped that chic. Makes Kurt Warners bride look like she in play
Mrs. Sheff sorta got that Jar Jar Binks look goin with that looooong face....
Mrs. Warner? Might have to give her a mouthful just to shut her the f* up....Cue Chief Wiggum- "where's your Jesus now God Boy?!?" or in that case, God Girl....

Sounds like Joe likes his $5 mil per, so he's gonna toe the company line....
I think any day now they'll announce the signing of Steve Balboni.
George is gathering his all-stars, just like in the 80s. History repeats.
How about Carl Pavano's recent visit to boston? Hmm........
