Music Talk Archive 2004:
Jerry played pedal steel on "Teach your Children"...
...recorded version. One of the GD books said that. I think that's so cool. I have always LOVED jerry's steel playing. I wish he would have kept doing it. I love his work in "sugar mag" and "dire wolf"...
anyone else miss and love Jerry's steel???
he played pedal stell live on the The Dead/Bob Dylan tour also Summer 1987, i remember seeing him up there on a few Dylan numbers i think.
One of the funniest moments for Jerry at the Lunt Fontainne run in '87 was when Sandy Rothman offered Jerry his banjo to play and Jer smiled and the crowd went nuts! Of course at that time we didn't know he'd been playing it at the Dylan rehearsals earlier in the year.
when are they gonna release some new riders shows with jerry on pedel steel?
funny...he never sings when he plays steel...not even back up
I was fortunate enough to have seen Jerry play acoustic guitar and banjo (in addition to countless electric shows), but bummed that the only Dylan/Dead show I caught (Anaheim, CA) was one of just two where he didn't play pedal steel. Damn contraption was sittin' up there on stage all show long, but Garcia never went near it.
It's nice to listen to the DVD-A of American Beauty...there is a lot more of Jerry on Peddal Steel in the Sugar Mags remix

There are a few good boards of shows floating around (SUNY Stonybrook 10/30-31/70 to name one) - you only need 1 or 2 - it's all EXACTLY the same tunes EVERY night . . .
PS - I don't have them but I know they exist . . .
87 -"I'll be your baby tonight" is sweeeeet

That recording is F-in' garbage - HORRIBLE quality - I KNOW there are many pristine boards of the same setlists from the same era - just gotta pok around . . .
Any Poco fans out there? I recall reading liner notes from one of their records that steel guitarist (and multi-instrumentalist) Rusty Young got his spot in the band due to Jerry's recommendation.
I started a thread similer to this one about a year ago. I wanted to know how many folks out there got to hear Jerry play the banjo, steel, or keyboards live. I myself caught one Garcia/Grisman acoustic show. Otherwise, it was all GD or JGB. Not that I'm complaining, but I would have loved to hear Jerry rip it up on some other instruments.
I think he played some pedal steel at Oxford Plains in '88 too.

Really? I was too far from the stage to be able to tell...
>>>SUNY Stonybrook 10/30-31/70
yes bob...i have this one...it's great...i have the other one too...though i forget the date
jerry plays some sweet steel on a song from one of the further records...furthur most it is
i looked it up...its called "venution lady" written and sung by paul pena...it's a great song on its own...but with jerry's steel solo...it's even sweeter...i went out and got the paul pena disc...it's called "new train" released in 2000...the record is very good

Damn dude, I know I was wasted @ those shows, but I'd STILL wanna be on the drugs YOU were doin'!!!!!
PS Billy - I'm about to clone a 2-cd show of NRPS w/Jerry - 10/30/70 - Cincinnati OH - probably FM, maybe SBD. Lemme know if you wanna hookup.
Jerry learned a lot about playing pedal steel from a guy named Pete Grant. Pete lives in Auburn, CA and has recently connected with the boys from Railroad Earth. he has sat in with them several times, most recently 11/4/04 @ Constable Jack's in Newcastle, CA for the entire show. added a sweet touch to RRE's amplified-acoustic sound...
..rumor has it that most of the 11/4 RRE show was video taped with lots of great close-ups....
love that high lonesome sound...... KK in Truckee
The "bonus" Direwolf on the Golden Road box set version of Workingman's Dead features Garcia on pedal steel while Weir takes the vocals. Good stuff.
>funny...he never sings when he plays steel...not even back up
Actually Jerry played pedal and sang back up on "One Toke Over The Line" - Brewer and Shipley.
There are some others he did too back then, but he isn't credited on the albums. Kind of like Grisman wasn't on some of the Dead stuff.
<<<"One Toke Over The Line"
wow...i didn't know he was on that...that's a great song
though i bet he didn't sing and play at the same time... : )
Wasn't there, so can't speak to that.
Bet Jerry could do it though.
Happy T-Day.
