On the Derek Trucks' CD "Soul Serenade" there's a track, "Bock To Bock", which sounds suspiciously similar to a track called "Mr B", a tribute to Ray Brown that is on the jazz album "Points Of View" by the Dave Holland Quintet. "Bock To Bock" is credited to B Montgomery whilst "Mr B" is credited to Dave Holland.

Anyone else picked up on this? Doesn't appear that either artist has acknowledged this almost note for note similarity between these tunes.

I don't have that Dave Holland album, but now you got me curious. I love the two that I do have so I'll have to pick this one up and check it out.

"Points of View" is excellent - let me know if you have trouble finding it, Damon, I'm sure I can score you one somewhere...

The song Derek plays appeared on "The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery" and was written by Wes' brother, so it predates Holland's tune. Perhaps Dave was paying homage to the brothers Montgomery. The title "Mr. B" is suspiciously similar to Coltrane's "Mr. PC", which was written in honor of the great jazz bassist Paul Chambers.

Hope this is helpful!

Ru, thanks for the kind offer but I picked it up at lunch time. I'm excited to go home and listen to it and compare the two while painting my basement.

Ru, listened to the entire cd last night. First off, let me say that this is one hell of a cd. I can defenitly say that after one listen I like it much better than "Prime Directive." A lot of the songs seem a bit darker than the other Holland stuff I have heard. That song "Metamorphisis" on the disc is really cool. I remember that song from when he played it live last year here in Pittsburgh. Thanks for recomending the disc.

I can defenitly see a similarity between the two songs but I can also notice a slight difference. Still they are very similar and I wonder if Holland was influenced by the Montgomery version Rob mentioned above.

Damon,

I'm very very pleased that "Points of View" met with your approval!

I too think Rob is correct in his assumption that DH was influenced by Wes Montgomery. I can't imagine any other reason for the similarities.

Having praised Dave Holland so much on this particular thread, I think it only fair to say that I DO love Derek Trucks too. "Soul Serenade" is just awesome...

Dave Holland is indeed a genius, I have really enjoyed his playing on the "Bitches Brew" box set by Miles Davis that I just picked up.

If you like Derek, and everybody should, check out his new Live at Georgia Theater 2-disc set. Smokin'! You can pick it up at hittinthenote.com.

They also have all the 2004 Instant Live shows from the Allman Brothers, if you just can't get enough Derek!

Thanks for the tip Rob - will definitely get some more Derek T and will check out hittinthenote.com.

By the way, I received a couple of really groovy CDs in the post today from CDBaby.com. They are by Global Funk and are absolutely amazing! You can download some of their shows from the great Live Archive.org.

Thanks Ru, hope you enjoy! Derek is the man :-)

Are you talking about Global Funk Council with Brian Jordan from Karl Denson's Tiny Universe? If so, they are indeed awesome! Maybe I'll go put Brian Jordan on the underrated thread...

Don't know if Brian Jordan used to play with Global Funk Council - he's not listed on the credits of their album "Keep On Pushin'". Maybe he gigs with them/used to gig with them??

GFC changed to Global Funk recently but the mainstays of the group remain Anthony Smith and Jonathan Stoyanoff.

Here's a link to their website:

Their shows can be found at the Live Archive under Global Funk.

Here's a link to a great show:
