Little Wing was PERFECT!!
Lola was rocking. Lots of feedback and broken strings at the end of the first set.

Great show! It would have been nice to have a special guest but I'm so glad it was straight up mule! This is the first time I've seen mule without a special guest in a long time!!

It was a pleasure to meet more zoners (buddy green, amy, lord henry!) and seeing the regulars was terrific as always! You guys are amazing coming from the far reaches of the bay area (and the country!)

I didn't realize yesterday was the anniversary of Berry Oakleys death, very fitting tribute!

going by the setlist alone, i'd say the best of the tour

Little Wing is not a new cover, they played it years back, but not regularly since 99/2000.

The New World Blues sure have arrived Joe, That song is a unique mule viewing experience, not a lot of particpation from the rest of the band but Warren goes to 100%

my belated thoughts on this show

My first thought: Matt Abts is a fucking madman. An unbelieveable display of rock drumming prowess (both shows), a man on fire.

This was a rock solid show both in terms of setlist and performance. Great crowd energy. No repeats (!) between the two Fillmores was very appreciated. That being said, the first part of set 1 felt like "greatest hits live"...Not to say I dont like those songs, but blindman and thorazine would consistently pack a more potent punch if they were played less frequently imho.
The expected new songs really provided a spark for this set. I love almost all of the new album and all of the new songs played in set 1 were excellent. Little Wing was a sweet kick down.

Set 2 was awesome. The Mule cut a psychedelic swath through the smoky haze of the Fillmore like some kind of black light laser...heavy music, power and precision intertwined, inseparable. I loved every second of this set. The mountain jam, although not fully developed (as it was at the 10.29 show) was very appreciated while it lasted. EFFIGY. NEW WORLD BLUES. IM A RAM

My buds from Humboldt caught all thru through Sacto and said San Diego was a notch above this show (I already believed it simply from Lord H's account)
BUT I am so glad to have caught this one. Im even more gald to have Eugene and Portland waiting for me at the end of this week like some kind of lottery prize...MULE is the best band in the land.

>>MULE is the best band in the land.

I respectfully disagree. This Warren band and his style of playing is too hard rock/heavy metal for me. Didn't like that sound back in the 70's either. The crowd and venue were great, met some beautiful people at the Fillmore, but I won't be seeing the Mule anytime again soon.

As much as I love Mule, I see your point Nancy - I saw 3 shows in a row for the first time this Oct - loved the 1st 2, but it really dragged the 3rd night. "Special occasion" shows are really where they're at (as this New Year's run will be - woo hoo!)

that sucks Nancy but it sounds like you at least had a "philosophical good time" ... I can relate a little as it took a while for these guys to grow on me...saw them a few times 94-97 era and wasnt that into them. Not sure what changed (maybe the heavier edge is an acquired taste?) but by 99 summer sessions tour I was starting to pay attention...Their New Years eve gig last year sealed the deal for me as I now cant get enough of GOVT MULE.

For my money, I have to agree...Mule is the best band in the land. Hands down the most consistently professional, on the money gig there is to go to. Sometimes its hard to "go there"...I had to "acquire" the taste also, but I had some really, really good friends get me there and a man who had the foresight to get me HERE and Zen who was a part of it all. Long after Mule has retired I will be thanking them for all the gifts I have today.

That said...Matt and Molo. The fucking bombs...both of them, equally, and for completely different reasons, the two best drummers playing actively today.

Add Rodney Holmes to that mix and just say the three best drummers playing today! :-)
