Phil & Friends - 4-20-01 - Tell me there is more like it!!
Oh, where have you been all my life, 4/20/01?
Not under the car seat, or in the glove box.
Last time I say you, you ran like a fox.
I put on my socks, and a piece of wood to knock.
In the cd player you will certainly rock.
2/18/01, 4/29/01, 4/30/01, 11/17/01 are shows that come close to 4/20 - IMHO. 3 of those are SBD's and are on gdlive ready for D/L.
Personal fav's are 7/3/99 and 6/12/01.
4-24-01 is also hot hot hot. There is a good AUD around:
Reading: Poem Part 3
Set 1: Jam> I Am The Walrus> Golden Road, Celebration> Millenium Jam> The Eleven> Unbroken Chain> *Whiskey River
Set 2: China Cat> I Know You Rider> Mountains of the Moon, Night of 1000 Stars> Cryptical Envelopment> Blues For Allah> Other One> Cryptical> Sugaree
E: Box of Rain
*1st time - Wille Nelson Song
Most any show from 9/00 thru 12/31/01 is right up there - in particular:
(agree w/previous mention of 4/24-29-30/01, 2/18/01, 11/17/01)
2/12/01
the rest of the Maritime run (2/15-17/01)
Red Rocks 7/6 & 7/01
7/15/01 Alpine Vly
7/27/01 (2nd favorite Phil show of all time)
7/28/01 (my favorite Phil show of all time)
8/4/01 (best of the 1-set shows)
11/8/01 set 1
11/12/01 (that last 80 min's is PERFECT!)
11/13/01 set 2
11/16/01
11/23-24/01
11/30/01
I could spend the rest of my life listening to nothing but late '00/'01 era Phil and be happy . . .
Bob is right. All the shows from 07/2?/01 and 11/??/01 are some of the best phil shows - IMHO.
That first Fall 2000 PLQ tour is still the most inspired music making I've ever witnessed (although the last Dirtbombs show I went to wasn't far behind). I was in the midst of grad school at the U. of Chicago when on a whim I went to check out "Phil Lesh and Friends" at the Riv Theater (I'd seen a different line-up at the Fillmore in Denver the year before and was suitably impressed but not overly so). By the end of the first Riv show on 10/18 I was dragging my jaw across the floor as I tried to scrounge tickets for the next three nights. And each show just seemed to get better and better. Then I was on my way to Denver then Vegas and then finally the New Years blowout at the Kaiser.
Musically I thought the best shows were 10/19, 10/21 and 10/25, but it was definitely the "shock and awe" of unexpected magic on 10/18 that brought me back to the phold....
Oh Yeah!
The earlier mention of 2/18/01 reminded me that I lost my copy of this great show a few months ago. Would anybody be willing to help me out with a B&P or trade for it? I'd be very grateful....
Peace
I agree with Sideshow Bob and again point out the wonderful 11/12/01. I stood 3 rows back the entire show with my jaw dropped. The overcrowded scene in that place was a bit much. But the music was divine. Jam>Comes A Time>Jam still one of my all time favorite P&F moments. And Set 2, well, just get it and hear it for yourself.
4/25/01 highly underrated imho. An amazing second set.
Agree the Chicago 10/00 shows are great - one of the runs I wish I'd gone to (along with the 4-show Maritime run in 2/01) - also the LA shows - 10/28 & 29/00 are pretty damned good . . . for once the midwest/west shows eclipsed the east coast shows (maybe cause the tour started east to west?).
One of my all-time favorite Phil & Friends shows, that I never see mentioned anywhere, is 8/4/01. In my opininion, the entire show is like a jamband clinic on transitions. The opening Jam > Fantasy > Brown Eyed Women is flawless. Disc 2 has a great St. Stephen > Eleven > St. Stephen that goes right into an up tempo Terrapin and closes with Golden Road.
The level of the shows known as PLQ are why most of us are here. The 2000 show in vegas ripped my face right off and left my jaw on the floor.
I would extend the time period into 2002 and recommend the Red Rocks shows highly. Very good audience versions of those around.
Ryan yer talkin' 'bout 8/3/01 (Charlotte), not 8/4/01 (Atlanta). 8/3 was pretty decent but 8/4 was the SHITZ!!!!! Jam-Help-Slip-Viola-Masons-Viola-Sugaree-Viola/Lovelite (w/Susan)/Birdsong-China Cat-Slip-Franklin's WOW!!!!!!
As for the '02 Phil @ Red Rocks - naww - average @ best - 1st night pretty decent between the Cryptical sandwich, 2nd night good end of 1st set w/Willie's harpist, but 2nd set killed by the Again & Again in the middle of Terrapin and the 2nd lamest Viola I ever saw - clocking in @ less than 8 min's (only 12/5/03 lamer). Both shows clocked in @ 155'. Certainly don't hold a candle to 7/6&7/01 Red Rocks or even TD this past summer . . .
Thoughts on 7/6/02? Listened to it the other day and didn't do much for me. Especially compared to the night before.

Check your setlists Sideshow Bob. The show you reference with Susan was 8/5/01 in Atlanta. I was talking about 8/4/01. Both are great shows. You've got to love those Viola Lee club sandwiches
Oo Damon, I love that show just like the rest...will give it another listen and let you know what I really think.
I'm not saying I don't like it, LH. I've never heard a bad PLQ show to be honest! Just that it didn't get me the other night when I listened to it.
THE INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH SET - 4.29.01
>>>but 8/4 was the SHITZ!!!!! Jam-Help-Slip-Viola-Masons-Viola-Sugaree-Viola/Lovelite (w/Susan)/Birdsong-China Cat-Slip-Franklin's WOW!!!!!!
it is my understanding that this show (8-4-01 Atlanta) was broadcast on the radio (Z93, now dave.fm) anyone have the FM broadcast of this show?
no ones mentioned Hartford 7-21-01?
There is a "P&F 2001 Project" on the Etree Bit torrents happening now. If I recall correctly they have 2-12, 2-15, 2-16 as active torrents and 2-18-01 is available for D/L from GDlive.
Randall, that 4/24/01 setlist looks fantastic
Man oh Man, that second set run of 4-24-01 starting with Mountains of the Moon all the way to the end was primo psychedelic stuff. Not to mention the explosive Walrus>Golden Road first set opener and the UBC. I guess it's my favorite concert. I dug PLQ '02 and was blown away by 11-29-03, but '01 probably represented PLQ at the height of its experimentatal energy. The 11-17-01 from Bethlehem may be my favorite of the shows I heard but did not see.
Listening to 11/08/01 right now...powerful stuff....I miss the Q
