Non-PF/Dead Show Reviews Archive 2004:
Bob Dylan 10/17 @ Haas Pavilion Berkeley
Well, well ,well first off I must say thank you to Mr Bob Dylan for playing these local bay area shows to kick off your fall tour. It's been a great run of shows for me and I feel very blessed to have had the chance to see him this time around.Once again from my heart Thank You Bob!!
On to the show....Several things made this one stand out from the last 2 I saw this week.Everything was going perfect until I got there about 1/2 hour before show time and saw a line to get in that went back for a least 6 blocks from the front door of the venue. Not a good sign. With friends already inside and others waiting in the line already we decided that there was nothing we could do so rather than stess about waiting for the line to move we'd go across the street to have a drink instead. After a quick round of double Jack & Ginger Ale's (thanks erin for the drinks) we headed back to the line with it in full motion. We managed to kinda graft ourselves in the moving line without anybody noticing. As we got the the front of the venue panic set in when we could hear Bob's voice through the open doors.AAAAAHHHHHHHHH!Time to hussle. We scrambled in the door and and got down to the floor just as the first song "God Knows" was ending.Damn!Oh well we made it.Next up was a beautifully done "If You See Her,Say Hello".It was if Bob was trying to reassure me that everythings ok now.You made it.Now enjoy the show. From the opening notes of this classic I knew it was gonna be alright.I have to say that out of the 2 other shows I saw this week (SF,Santa Clara) that the sound in this place seemed a lot better. All the instruments we're much clearer and I could really hear what Bob was singing about.Unlike the muddy sound at the Grand earlier in the week.I was really hoping for a "Masters Of War" in the heart of Berkeley tonight but he had a few unexpected tricks up his sleeve tonight. The absolute highlights of the show for me were the "Desolation Row","Boots Of Spanish Leather","You Ain't Going Nowhere" & the icing on the cake "Blind Willie McTell".I was breathless after that incredible set of tunes.I knew you still had it in ya Bob.The only negative thing I have to say about this night was the over excited campus security that decided I was the one he was going to hassle about puffin' out.I mean this was Berkeley here.I was not the only one doing so.Even as he was harassing me people were smoking all around me.After a few minutes of listening to this guy tell me to give him my pipe or come with me and "someone" was going to write me a ticket(?)WTF!!!I got him to understand that I'll put it away and you won't have any more problems from me.Before he left he insisted that I show him my bowl to make sure there was nothing left in it for me to smoke.Once again this is Berkeley we're talking about.I reassured him that he was doing a "good job" and he seemed happy with that so he wandered away. All this went down during a rockin' version of "Summer Days".Kinda wierd soundtrack music for the scene that was unfolding.Aside from that everything made for another wonderful evening of songs by the master.Props must be givin' to the awesome friends I got to spend the day/show with.My dear friend Brett, thanks for keeping us nicley baked whenever you're around.Gotta love that silver haze Jefferson thanks so much for letting us invade your home for dinner and drinks before the show.I hope I didn't offend you too much when I asked you to take the Phish you were listening to off the stereo when we got there.Sorry buddy.
At last but not least a special thanks go out to my friend Erin.Thank you so much for going to all 3 of these shows with me.You're a beautiful soul and I'm very glad to have the chance to hang out and get to know you.Your passion for Dylan excites me more than you'll ever know. Thanks also to two amazing Zoners I met earlier in the week Seth & Emily. All of you guys rock!!!
If you have the chance to see him on this tour when it comes to your town please do.
This is the real thing.God bless you Bob.....

PRICELESS!!!!!!
I'm gonna see Zimmy 11/17 & 20 'round my way . . .
2 quickies...
First was Dylan playing mostly guitar or keyboards. A few months back he was playing almost all keys...Because of an injury or something I think???
Next...Nice to see "If You See Her say Hello" in the setlist. Don't think I've seen that one much lately.
...I'm a BIG Dylan freak, for years...glad he sounded GOOD! Always nice to hear. Bob's the fuckin' best when he wants to be....
Bob played guitar only Wed & Thursday last week and only for 1 song. Fresno & Berkeley were keyboards and harp. Shows were good, Fresno is my all time favorite Dylan show. Crowd in Berkeley was very rude.
>>>Crowd in Berkeley was very rude.<<<< thats because the whole town is full of communists...Great review hedspace
whats wrong about communists?
nothings wrong with "pinko's" as long as they continue to buy mcdonalds hamburgers & starbucks
>>>Crowd in Berkeley was very rude.<<<<
I don't know if I'd say it this way, the berkeley crowd was okay...but there's no comparision to the crowd at the grand.
Everyone at the grand had one singular thought in mind: BOB!!
There was a debate going on, there was some baseball game going on at the same...but the only thing anyone was talking about was dylan. It was awesome...it created an amazing energy for the show!
Im going tonight who else is going?
