Non-PF/Dead Show Reviews Archive 2004:
Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival
Well, I saw some killer pickin' here, folks. A nice free Bluegrass festie in the City by The Bay. Got to meet up with Cinderoo, King Leisure, Doogels, Nancy. All was great. So much damn music to see that you get confused.
Highlights for me -
Derroll Anger & The Waybacks. Killer Cumberland.
Drew Emmitt Band
Hot Rize (their Martha White theme was cool)
Hazel Dickens
Old Crow Medicine Show
Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder
Steve Earle (fuck the fbi)
Del McCoury
This festie is real nice, cops are cool, you can bring your cooler and beers and be mellow while listening to fine tunes.
I had a real good time...
PS thanx to the King for clueing us into the early setup, our seats were awesome the whole weekend.
i may possibly be old crow medicine show's biggest fan. i love that damn band.
I keep missing them. Gotta check them out soon.

At the Targhee BG Fest in August in Wyoming, I got to sit with about 10 other people in the lobby of the hotel and watch D.A. jam with Tim O'Brien, Casey Driesen (Tim's fiddle player) and a few others. Must've been about 11, 4 hours after the close of the festival. Tim O'B left about 12:30. I stayed til 1 AM watching while a friend left at 3AM. Open Road was jamming on the front lawn. These guys LOVE music. I'd about given my left nut to be in SF for this fest, but a new job I HAD to take came through so...I even have a good bud who lives 10 minutes from the stage. I was so bummed. NEXT YEAR!!! How was my hero Sam Bush with Emmylou??? What a lineup - this still tortures me.....Out of work for 5 1/2 months and I have to start a job the week before. AAAARRRRRRRGGGGGG...
I couldn't believe how cool it was.
Highlights for me would be the Songwriters Circle, especially Steve Earle, and the Del McCoury Band. Funny how I went and read in Steve's bio the next day how he and Del arn't on speaking terms the last few years.
The McCoury's are incredible. Excellent "Vincent Black Lightning 1952" and the "Cold, Rain and Snow" - as the fog rolled in - had me imagining Jerry's ghost grinning, tripping through Golden Gate Park.
I was a chump and missed Saturday. Next year both days. This is a great fun festival.
rooster stage was excellent; nick lowe, john prine, robert earl keen (yes, he played a very nice circa '77 china cat jam and then went into one if his own songs)
arrow stage with tony rice and peter rowan on saturday, gillian welch on sunday
banjo stage with ralph stanely, emmy lou, del and the boys
great show
> especially Steve Earle, and the Del McCoury Band
Did they play together? When they toured in support of Steve's LP "The Mountain," Del couldn't stand Steve's cursing, and that drove them apart. Strange but true.

Doogels and I caught this bit after the other zoners had already left! Glad we weren't the only ones who enjoyed it!
I've never heard of REK before but he had the crowd kicking up a lot of dust in the back, I'll definitely give him another try when he comes back through town
Did anyone check out the Drew Emmitt Band? He is one of the original guys from Leftover Salmon -- who is taking a [permanent?] haiatus. I loved seeing Vince Herman solo & with various bands and am curious about Drew. Vince fills a room with his beautiful music, great sense of humor and slamgrass pickin guitar.
Any review on the Drew Emmitt Band? Thanks.
I saw Drew Emmitt last night in Waitsfield, VT. Awesome. The gutar player he has with him, Ross Martin, is fast as lightning. Tony Furtado came out and jammed with them some as well. I didn't know one song they played by name (sorry), but they blew me away. I was there to see Railroad Earth, but I walked away a Drew Emmitt Band fan.
I can't believe that I left out Emmylou and Sam Bush out as a highlight.
Emmylou was sublime and Sam Bush was the icing on the cake.
Truly, I am not worthy.
