Non-PF/Dead Show Reviews Archive 2004:
KDTU at the Fillmore 9-25
Anybody else make it?
I ended up going alone because my friends bailed on me, but of course you're never really alone at the fillmore!
I got to the door for the obligatory bag check and the girl said to me 'nice to see you again, it's been a while' I love the fillmore!
Up the stairs and it's familiar faces at the apple bin, familiar faces in the bathroom line, familiar faces at the bar. I've never had a better time alone
I caught the last couple minutes of the opener, Samantha and The Ritual. Samantha is like Elizabeth Shue singing Melissa Ethridge. Not really my thing but they were pretty good, the band was solid.
Karl hit the stage maybe 10:15, warmed the crowd up a bit, then announced that '90% of what we do is for the ladies and we keep 8% for ourselves, but fellas, we've still got 2% for you...and this is it! The five second check. Let me explain, the five second check only takes 5 seconds. Look in a mirror and ask yourself 'have I got my groove on?' and when you've got it, you've got it!'
And he went on about how to get your groove on, and how to use it once you've got it. It's true, 90% of what Karl does is for the ladies
I found some more friends right in front of the stage so at that point I was right in front of karl, 3 people back, and some asshole, probably a zoner
, starts yelling at the top of his lungs--this is a no standing zone people, turn it up a notch--people we didn't come here to stand--over and over and over again. Thank you Mr. Buzzkill, so I left...headed towards the back.
I expected it to be way more crowded but it was just right...enough people to have a great crowd but still enough room to dance! Being in the back I realized KDTU isn't a band you come to see anyhow, hearing is what it's all about--with the except of the white keyboard player the band was five black guys wearing black shirts against a dark red curtain. From the back all you could really see was the cheshire drummer--he had the most amazing white smile, it was radiating the whole show.
Sorry, no setlist, I'm not good at that, but I did recognize a lot of tunes...definitely familiar stuff. It was a very fun night, karl got the crowd moving!
Yeah, I went to the show on Saturday- its was a lot of fun.......and I also went by myself, but I ran into quite a few folks I knew as well........it fun going solo sometimes! Makes me break out of my shell.
I was at the Saturday show as well.. I had a great time, and it was awesome hanging out with my fillmore friends once again.
Thanks Jason, Trish, Chris, Nick, Gene, and of couse Tommy. To all the rest of the fillmore crew, thank you..
