As a woman, I would usually find myself politically opposed to a term such as slackjaw Jezebel. It connotes a temptress, a wayward woman and who, according to urbandictionary.com, likes to give blow jobs. (Yes, it did take some courage to write that.)

Except, I find myself really liking the song. Why?

The instrumental bridge . . . takes me away . . .
The guitar solo has a beautiful, seductive tone
The jazzy keyboards makes me want to dance
The song has a steady, clear, simple beat
like the heart
The bass riffs are gently melodic, up and down the frets
The basic six string riff is hot and dirty

I find it a much more lyrically intelligent and sexier song than BLD - divining rod indeed. A good cut to release as a single, in my opinion.

The question is: Will the women admit to liking it? What about the men?

5. SLACKJAW JEZEBEL

Babies were cryin’ before you got here
I believe they're cryin’ still
The world as we know it, keeps right on turning
I guess it always will

Still, something's changed - I hate to admit it
I ain't been the same since you came around
My mind is swollen from the weariness
Wish you never flagged me down

Twisted angel, cast out of some strange heaven
Sent down here to pull me out of my shell
You show up on my doorstep
honey dripping from your mouth
Like some slackjaw Jezebel

Flesh and bones is all we're made of
I couldn't stopped you if I tried
The spell you were casting - way too heavy
Now I can't be satisfied

But you think you're gonna to save me - you better think again
I've had saviors galore
Although you are a vision
An angel wrapped in sin
I've seen it all before

Twisted angel
Cast out of some strange heaven
Sent down here, landed on my window sill
Now you walking through my backdoor
Honey dripping from your mouth
Like some slackjaw Jezebel

You've got your bag of dust
And you're divining rod
I wonder how I got myself here
Wheel's spinning faster
And I know I got to jump off
I guess I'm weighing
The fire against the fear

You spoon-fed my ego
Made me feel so young
Kissed me 'til my lips were sore
I know you're just a Jezebel
With a poisonous tongue
I've been down this road before

It's full of twisted angels
Cast out of some strange heaven
Sent down here
Puttin’ me through Hell
You show up on my doorstep
Honey drippin’ from your mouth
Like some slackjaw Jezebel
Oh, like some slackjaw Jezebel
------------------------------------------

And yes, you can hear Warren saying: "Let's eat," at the very end of the song, but you have to play it loud.

:-) Angela

Yes, the song rocks but what do you think about the risque lyrics?

It's rock and roll, based in the blues. You can squeeze my lemon, baby, 'til the juice runs down my leg. Unsavory characters abound in Deaddom.

what's the lyrical content really matter? Its a rockin' tune, and the words sound great. Do you want Warren to only write happy, safe songs about puppies and rainbows, Angela?

Take away the risque, depressing, evil or sad Mule tunes and you're barely left with a shows worth of material.

I would say it's the most risque they've done. (I love it.)

I don't think Warren has ever written a "happy" song. So no, I didn't expect puppies and rainbows.

I thought the use of language was particularly catchy with Slackjaw. Just like the tempo.

I also thought the song was pretty much, in your face sexual. Even Bad Little Doggie only alluded to sex. I just think Slackjaw has more meat musically and lyrically.

And I think Lola is also another great song. Not a lot of depth musically, but very catchy lyrically. So I think Slackjaw is a real winner of a tune. That's all.

you know, I was thinking about this as I was driving home, and I thought about Left Coast Groovies. How about the proposed wife-swap in THOSE lyrics? Don't oversell the sex in Slackjaw. Honey dripping from her lips COULD refer to insincere sweet words from a bad influence.
Whatever; I love it whichever way.

Yea, most people say it's about some woman who can't keep her mouth shut. But I don't know. Seems a bit risque to me.

Agreed. Just listening now to the Roseland show. I would offer it but my burner is burnt. What a great show. People were tremendously happy with the performance. ANd the band wsa great!!! If you can get your hands on the show the source I am listening to is Nak CM 100 W/CP4 Shotguns>Sony SBM1>Sony PCM-M1. It is as good as a soundboard. Sweet.

Nak 300 SHOTGUNS in the ROSELAND? Ugh - that HAS to sound like total DOGSHIT!

I swear - It's like the best show I've ever heard in Roseland or the Beacon. Don't know nothing about the source info, just wanted to share.

It does not even have that airy sound. I was surprised myself. And hardly any crowd noise, cept during the slower songs and that does not even mar it.

Hey if you think you have a better source, I would love to hear it.

Cool Zeke. I know of many DNC'rs who will be there but not many Zoners. There is a great Mule discussion there in the Warren Haynes folder. Maybe we'll all pre-party somewhere near the venue.

That's a good question...the crew needs to start planning something...I think there is a bar right near venue some people like to congregate at before Beacon shows. Join us on DNC Angela in the Warren Haynes discussion. I'll also talk to my Bro I'm travelling with as well, maybe we can host preparty. We are staying at the Lucern right near the venue.

i love warren....without a doubt the virtuoso or our generation...i actually call him out generationaly with hendrix, jimmy page, stevie ray and warren....that's how much i love and respoect his playing and character.....that being said the new album is terrifically boring......warren is a much better interpretive player.....he does has some great songs but he is not a great songwriter....i mean look at the setlists over the past few years....all pretty much the same....and while bad little doggie is a dope song who wants to hear it every show....don't get me wrong...lemme state again that i mention warren with the other great guitar heroes of my life and i love his playing and demeanor like no one else....but i'm hoping that all his time with phil will translate into his own band....he need to get psychedelic.....he needs a lyricist....and he really needed dave schools to join the mule....he needs a virtuoso bass player to challenge him.....that's the real shame of the last few years....schools really blew the opportunity of a lifetime......and that is my fricking 2 cents.....aloha, mr. hand

Yes from NYC. Live in Brooklyn, work in Manhattan.

I should be at the Christmas Jam, hopefully. My dad has a bit of a health issue, though I think I should be good to go until after the New Year.

I checked out the Dead thread but didn't really see any plans for a get together for the Beacon shows. Let me know if you guys decide anything.

Angela
